Hillsborough County to Host UYFL National Championships for Second Consecutive Year

TAMPA, Fla. - (November 26, 2012) — The Tampa Bay Sports Commission and Tampa Bay & Company, in partnership with Plant City Parks and Recreation, are excited to announce that the United Youth Football League (UYFL) National Championships will return to Hillsborough County this December.

The UYFL consists of football teams and cheerleading squads from throughout the United States, ranging in age from six to 16 years old. The football championship will consist of six days of competition at the Otis M. Andrews Complex in Plant City beginning on Sunday, December 2nd, while the cheerleading competition will be held at the University of South Florida Sun Dome on Saturday, December 8th.

“All of us at the United Youth Football League are extremely proud of the partnerships and relationships we have built with the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, Tampa Bay & Company, and Plant City Parks and Recreation,” commented Tony Arena, UYFL National Director. “We are excited to offer our teams an incredible destination that features top-notch facilities, accommodations and entertainment. Combining all that Tampa Bay has to offer with several new initiatives and special programs, this Championship will reach new levels in 2012.”

“Plant City is thrilled to again host the UYFL National Championships,” said Jack Holland, Plant City Parks and Recreation Director. “All categories of local businesses benefit through increased sales while hosting these visitors from all over the country.  We encourage area residents to come out and support the tournament by watching some of these highly skilled teams play.”

Last year’s inaugural National Championships drew 77 championship football teams, 22 bowl series football teams and 75 cheerleading squads. 140 football teams and 120 cheerleading squads are scheduled to compete in this year’s Championship, which runs from December 2-8, 2012.

“The growth this National Championship has experienced in its second year is a testament to UYFL’s leadership and vision,” said Jason Aughey, Senior Director of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission. “We are confident that through our collaborative efforts with Plant City Parks and Recreation we will deliver a first-rate experience for all UYFL teams, coaches and families this December.”
