An event for all five senses!
Modern roller derby appeals to people from all walks of life, from aging fans of the banked track, to 20-something hipsters who, before roller derby, wouldn’t have been caught dead at a sporting event. Our demographics cut a wide swath across gender, race and age, with the average fan in the middle-to upper middle-class tax bracket and between 20-45 years old. The WFTDA member leagues provide quality, family-friendly entertainment with an edgy component that captures the imagination of fans and the media.
A little bit about TBDD (Tampa Bay Derby Darlins):
In August of 2005, Angela Kroslak (aka Dee Bauchery), of Tampa, had a vision to form an all-women’s roller derby league. She spent tireless hours recruiting girls and knocking on skating rink doors for a facility to practice. Girls began to join and United Skates of America agreed to become the league’s home rink. Along with Angela, a small but powerful group of skaters helped to build the league and organize a governing board. The Tampa Bay Derby Darlins (TBDD) all-female flat track roller derby league was born in October 2005.
During the league’s inaugural season, the Derby Darlins also established an all-star travel team, the Tampa Tantrums. They were initiated to a higher skill level when they played the Minnesota Roller Girls who at the time were one of the fiercest teams in the country. In the last few years, the Tantrums have played teams from Detroit, Nashville, Arkansas, Atlanta, and Milwaukee, as well as all over Florida. The Tantrums are presently ranked 5th in the South Central Division.
In August 2007, TBDD was accepted to the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), the governing body of women’s roller derby. Every February, TBDD hosts the Sunshine Skate Florida State Roller Derby Championship during the Florida State Fair. Again this year, the Tampa Tantrums maintained their title as state championship for a 2nd year.
