TAMPA, Fla. - On Tuesday, March 2nd, four Florida universities met at George M. Steinbrenner Field to compete in the inaugural Florida Four Tournament. This year’s event showcased four nationally recognized collegiate baseball programs, with three ranked in the top ten. Over 8,300 spectators were in attendance for the historical event, which is scheduled to return in March 2011.
The double header kicked off with the South Florida Bulls facing the 10th-ranked Miami (FL) Hurricanes in game one. Miami (6-1) took advantage of early mistakes by the Bulls defense, jumping out to a 7-0 lead after three innings. The seven run lead was more than enough for Miami starting pitcher, Steven Ewing, who allowed just two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings. Miami reached double digit runs for the fourth time this year, cruising to a 15-2 victory over the Bulls.
Game two featured a top five match-up between in-state rivals Florida and Florida State. The 2nd-ranked Seminoles (7-0) scored seven runs in the first inning and withheld a late rally by the 5th-ranked Gators (6-1) to preserve a 10-5 victory. Tuesday’s match-up was the first of four games between the two schools this year.
The 2nd Annual Florida Four will return to Steinbrenner Field on March 1, 2011 and will once again feature South Florida, Miami, Florida State, and Florida.
