TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Bay Sports Commission partnered with Sun Sports & FSN Florida to successfully host the 2006 Florida Sports Writers Association College Football Media Days at the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina on the final weekend of July.
Previously held in Orlando, this two-day format provided FSWA members the opportunity to meet and speak with the state’s 12 college football coaches about the upcoming season. Day one featured the University of Miami’s Larry Coker and the University of Florida’s Urban Meyer while day two showcased the University of South Florida’s Jim Leavitt and Florida State University’s Bobby Bowden, among others.
“It’s not everyday that a community has the opportunity to play host to each of the 12 state university head football coaches all on the same weekend,” said Rob Higgins, Executive Director of the Tampa Sports Commission. “Combine this fact with getting a chance to showcase your destination to countless sports media from around the state, and you can see why the FSWA College Football Media Days is such a truly special event.”
Highlights from the 2006 FSWA Media Days will begin airing on Sun Sports on Monday, August 14th.
The FSWA College Football Media Days unofficially kicks off Tampa’s run of hosting several major events. Starting in March of 2007, Tampa will welcome the ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament to the St. Pete Times Forum. In 2008, Tampa becomes only the third city to have hosted the NCAA Men’s Basketball 1st and 2nd Rounds and the NCAA Women’s Basketball Final Four in the same year. In 2009, Tampa plays host to the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament and the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship. In 2012, the NCAA Frozen Four will make its first trip to the Southeast in the history of the Championship.
