March; Where We've Been and What's Ahead

TAMPA, FL - 30! That’s the number of events Tampa Bay will welcome in during the month of March. With that said, thousands of visitors, both participants and fans alike, will dine in our restaurants, seek out desirable accommodations and be thrust in the middle of some of the best attractions and entertainment in the country.

Here's a recap of where the Tampa Bay Sports Commission has been thus far in March, and where we are going. 

This record-setting month kicked-off on March 1 as 70 Spring Break Tennis teams (March 1 – April 4) opened their training at multiple courts around the area. Fresh off introducing USRowing to our beautiful waters, the Stewards Foundation will host a month’s worth of training to dozens of top-tier NCAA rowing programs. Gloves also began to pop when the National Club Baseball Association (NCBA) Spring Training Showcase (March 1 – April 4) began its ninth straight year in Tampa Bay. Mike Sansone Community Park will be the epicenter of all the club baseball action throughout the month.

March 2 witnessed the Pan Am Sport Regatta I on the Tampa By-Pass Canal, while the International Racquetball Tour Spring Break Pro-Am (March 6-9) returned to the Harbour Island Athletic Club & Spa for the second-straight year. Top racquetball players from around the world competed in the event, drawing hundreds of spectators throughout the three-day event. Weekend Hockey (March 6-10), Florida’s largest Adult Hockey Tournament, took top showing at the Brandon Ice Sports Forum as over 32 teams competed in the 8th-Annual event.

Six other events were in order on March 7 as the Glazier 2014 Football Clinic (March 7-9), the International Dance Challenge Regionals (March 7-9) and the Summerfield Basketball (YBOA) Boys and Girls State Qualifiers (March 7-9) all made great impacts on the area. Additionally, the Global Sports Alliance (GSA) Baseball March Madness Super Regional (March 7-9) and the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) 29th-Annual All-Star Basketball Classic rounded-out the weekend.

The Florida State Fairgrounds and the Bob Thomas Equestrian Center hosted the Dixie Paint Horse Club March Paint Show (March 8-9), while JC Handly Sports Complex opened its doors to the Florida Youth Soccer Association (FYSA) Round of 16/Quarterfinals (March 8-9).

Recently, trap shoot enthusiasts took aim at the Silver Dollar Trap Shooting Southern Grand American Tournament (March 10-23) at the Silver Dollar Shooter’s Club.

The Valspar Championship (March 13-16) tees off today at Innisbrook Resort/Copperhead Course as dozens of the PGA’s best try and tame the Snake Pit.

Joseph Volleyball’s Florida Pre-Qualifier (March 13-16) takes place at the multifunctional Tampa Convention Center. Tampa Preparatory School will also host three days of Big Shot Basketball as they host there March Tournament (March 14-16). One day later, Three Point Hoops Think Pink Tournament (March 15-16) will tip at the University of Tampa, while the FYSA Region C Cup Finals (March 15-16) makes a return trip to JC Handly Park.

The American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine (AOASM) will begin its meetings at Westin Tampa Harbour Island Hotel (March 19-22). The 2014 Bulls Invitational (Hosted by the University of South Florida) will vault its way onto the local scene as they welcome opponents into the renowned USF Track & Field Stadium.

The GSA Baseball Spring Break Classic (March 21-23) will be followed by the 2nd-Annual Tampa Bay Kids Triathlon at Adventure Island on March 22. This unique and fun event is scheduled to begin at 7:15 a.m. and is designed specifically for youth ages 6-14. Click here for more information.

Silver Dollar Trap Shooting returns to the Shooter’s Club for the Florida State Shoot (March 25-30), and Stadium Jumping’s Tampa Bay Classic (March 26-30) makes its return to the Bob Thomas Equestrian Center. The horse jumping action continues as the Central Florida Hunter Jumper Association (CFHJA) Tampa Bay Classic (March 26-30) leaps onto the Florida State Fairgrounds for a weekend of competition.

Get ready for the rumble of the raceway as the newly sponsored Firestone Grand Prix takes to the Tampa Bay streets the weekend of March 28. Top Indy Car drivers from around the world, along with fans and spectators, will get to experience one of the world’s fastest sports.

The popular Tampa Twilight Criterium and Festival (March 29-31) closes out the month of March as road bikes from around the country hit top speeds throughout Downtown Tampa.
