TAMPA, FL - The ISSA recently held the 2017 ISF/ISSA World Tournament of Champions at Tampa, Florida. The event concluded on the weekend of January 27-29 with 135 teams competing for the Championship Rings. It was the largest ISSA tournament ever and perhaps the largest three-day single weekend senior tournament in the USA. (About a dozen additional teams were denied entry when the various complexes reached their playing capacity.)
The organizers used 29 fields throughout the Tampa Bay Region this year and the event generated over 3000 room nights in local lodging. Special design Championship rings were awarded to all the players on the thirty-three division 1st Place teams at the event as the 397 games concluded on Sunday. This was the sixth year for the popular senior tournament which the ISSA partners with the International Softball Federation (ISF) and the Tampa Bay Sports Commission.
The ISF has now merged with baseball to form the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) and the World Governing Body will be sanctioning and organizing the two sports in the 2020 Olympics in Japan. The 2017 Senior World Cup to be held in the Roanoke Valley of Virginia on June 21-25 will now carry the WBSC desination (as will all future events formerly involving the ISF.) ISSA Executive Director, RB Thomas, Jr. has organized and directed the Senior World Cup for 16 years. Last year the event had 97 team participants and is recognized as one of the premier senior softball tournaments in the World.
